The history of this area dated to the 8th century when it became part of the Caliphate of Cordoba. It was under Muslim rule during this period, and many local Islamic influences remain today. As time passed, the Town was frequently fought over and changed hands multiple times as it became part of different kingdoms and empires. In 1836, during the Carlist Wars, Alozaina was occupied by Spanish troops for several weeks before being liberated by rebel forces. This marked the end of military occupation in this area. In 1873, the Town officially joined Spain as part of the province of Málaga. According to historians, the name "Alozaina" means "a healthy, mild place," but according to others, it means "small fortress." In any case, stopping by this warm location in Sierra de las Nieves is highly recommended.

Popular Events in Alozaina

There is a rich and varied holiday season in Alozaina. Among its many celebrations, we must single out the following: One of the oldest traditions in the community is the Flour Carnival, which takes place during the last weekend in February...

Along with dressing up, the locals hold competitions and spread flour throughout the neighbourhood. This strange festival originated in ancient times when young men would use flour to find "girlfriends" for themselves. At the time, touching a girl was against the law until they were a good couple and married, so they used flour as a barrier to prevent skin touching. Today, if a boy and girl get along, they throw flour over their friends after the boy douses her!

During Holy Week (Semana Santa)

Alozaina was one of the first cities in Spain to allow a female to carry the throne during the procession.

Corpus Christi

The altars are highly decorated to make the procession more beautiful, and the locals gather beautiful flowers and scented plants to decorate the streets with.

Journey to the Cross of Jorox

Every year on the first Sunday in May, there is a Romeria (pilgrimage) known as Jorox Day. The mirror and crystal Cross are carried by carriage to Jorox and decorated with flowers. Following the rural mass, the locals (pilgrims) spend the rest of the day outdoors in the countryside, enjoying food, beverages, and the Jorox fandangos, a traditional dance.

Cultural week

In June, Alozaina hosts a cultural week with a wide range of events. For instance, one year, they honoured the Town's band. The following year, they honoured Maria Sagredo, who fought the Arabs to defend the captured city. The villagers of the Town dress up in medieval attire for the week, setting up stands and lighting the area with torches while listening to music from that era. This even is extremely popular an draws thousands of tourists each year to flock to Alozaina and surrounding towns.

Similar celebrations are held in numerous other inland villages in the province of Malaga. They remind us of the history of these municipalities by bringing us back to the tastes of the past, where we can taste the smell of incense and aromatic plants.

The Santiago and Santa Ana Fair

There are sporting events, contests, concerts, all accompanied by the sound of Alozaina's music band, which are held around the 25th and 26th of July and on the days the fair is in session.

The Olive Fair

A local celebration honours the olive - the primary crop grown in Alozaina. In Constitution Square, olive harvest tastings are available, and the "Olive Queen" receives a prize for her contribution to collecting and processing olives.

As one can see, Alozaina offers a wide variety of cultural activities to participate in! It just goes to show how Malaga's inland regions each have something unique to offer!
