A Brief History of Guaro
The village located between Coin and Tolox is reliant on the Grande River, whose fertile plains are vital to agriculture. It has a population of 2367 people which is made up of 1,213 males and 1,154 females according to the 2021 Census. It is part of the comarca of Valle de Guadalhorce. Guaro is located near the Sierra de Mijas at an elevation of 354 metres above sea level. The land area measures 22 square kilometres. Guaro's main economic activities include olive and almond farming, as well as other traditional irrigated crops.
The village, which dates to the Middle Ages, is made up of narrow, winding streets lined with white houses that are centred on St. Michael's Church. The Chalcolithic Period artefacts discovered in Mount Ardite attest to the existence of humans in Guaro since the Copper Age. In mount El Povillar, the Romans also left their mark. Pottery, tiles, bricks, and coins suggest that a village existed there between the second and fourth centuries AD.
The Arabs built the village that we can see today. Before relocating to the present location, the Moors first settled in Guaro Viejo. In 1485, the Catholic Monarchs took control of the village in Sierra de las Nieves. In 1614, Guaro received a charter from King Philip IV to become a separate village.
As compensation for his services to the Spanish Crown, the same King established the County of Guaro 34 years later and gave it to Juan Chumacero Sotomayor Carrillo de la Vega, a judge of the Royal Chancery of Granada and a knight of the Order of St. James.
