Pizarra
At the base of the 350-meter-high Sierra del Hacho, 30 kilometres upriver in the Guadalhorce Valley you will find the rural Spanish town of Pizarra. Located in the rich, irrigated lowlands full of orchards and vineyards; it enjoys a stunning natural setting that is ideal for those who enjoy being outside.
It covers an area of 63.6 km² and has a population of 9,607 splits by 4,815 males and 4,792 females according to the census of 2021.

Location
Pizarra is located 30 kilometres West of Malaga making it easily accessible by car, bus, or train. The train journey is particularly picturesque, offering stunning views of the Guadalhorce Valley and the surrounding mountains. To take the train to Pizarra, head to Malaga train station or any of its stops and hop on the C2 local train line that goes to Pizarra. This train line operates about eight times a day and takes approximately 30 minutes to reach your destination.
On the other hand, if you decide to take the bus, you can take the M-231 line from Malaga Bus Station, which takes around 50 minutes and costs approximately 1.60 euros.

Hiking Trails in Pizarra
If you love to explore nature, there are many hiking routes in and around Pizarra.
One of the most famous hiking routes in the area is the Caminito del Rey, also known as "The King's Little Pathway." This exhilarating trail takes you along elevated wooden walkways and cliff-side paths, offering breathtaking views of the Guadalhorce River and the surrounding canyon.
For a more leisurely hike, Barranco Blanco is a fantastic choice. This tranquil valley is home to a lush riverbed with natural pools perfect for a refreshing dip. The shade from the surrounding trees makes it an ideal spot for a summer hike.
A not to miss site is the climb and views from the Statue of the Saint.
In 1916, Puerto Hermoso's Count, Fernando Soto Aguilar, commissioned a bronze and cast-iron Sacred Heart of Jesus statue that stood 2.5 meters tall and rotated on a plate. It was intended to be placed atop the Sierra de Gibralmora, near Pizarra.
Sadly, the sculpture was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and replaced with a cross. In 1995, a new sculpture of the Sacred Heart was erected in its place by sculptor Miguel Fuente del Olmo from Jaén. The sculpture is situated at one of the highest points of the Sierra, with arms extended towards the town of Pizarra and its meadow. Another interesting festival in the region is the San Blas festival which takes place in February. During this festival, the villagers make a pilgrimage to the statue of the saint, which rises on a mountain above the town, with a typical doughnut for the saint to bless it. It sounds like a unique and curious tradition.
